Residents of Aurora are raising significant concerns over a proposed oil and gas drilling project near the Aurora Reservoir. The plan, initiated by Civitas Resources and its subsidiary, Crestone Peak Resources, aims to drill 156 new wells as part of the Lowry Ranch Comprehensive Area Plan. This development has sparked apprehension among local homeowners and environmental advocates.
Community Opposition
Local groups, such as Save the Aurora Reservoir (STAR), have been vocal in their opposition. Residents fear potential health risks and environmental degradation associated with the drilling operations. Tisha Foard, a resident of the Southshore neighborhood, expressed her concerns, stating, “We were just shocked, just in awe, that this could even happen so close to communities with families and homes and children and school buildings.”
Regulatory Approval
Despite the community’s objections, the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission approved the project in a close 3-2 vote. The decision followed a year-long review process and multiple public hearings where residents voiced their concerns. The commission’s approval allows the project to proceed, bringing the drilling operations closer to residential areas and the reservoir.
