Residents of Aurora are raising significant concerns over a proposed oil and gas drilling project near the Aurora Reservoir. The plan, put forth by Civitas Resources and its subsidiary, Crestone Peak Resources, involves drilling 32 new wells on land owned by Lowry Ranch, approximately half a mile from the reservoir.
Community members have expressed apprehension about potential health and environmental impacts. Tisha Foard, a resident of the Southshore neighborhood near the reservoir, shared her worries, stating, “It feels really awful and unfair.” She emphasized the community’s unity in opposing the project, noting that yard signs throughout the neighborhood reflect shared concerns about the proximity of the drilling operations to their homes.
In response to these concerns, the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC) held a public hearing where residents presented their case against the proposed drilling. Despite the community’s opposition, the ECMC approved the project in a close 3-2 vote, allowing the drilling to proceed.
The decision has left many residents feeling frustrated and unheard. The Foard family, along with their neighbors, continue to advocate for their community’s health and safety, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of the long-term impacts of such projects on residential areas.
